Boxing: The Ring of Fortune
The world registered May 2, 2015 as an ultimate day in the history of sports. It was the day when two great boxers—Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquaio—locked horn at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight between two boxing giants was regarded as The Fight of the Century by some people whereas other considered it as the Battle for Greatness.
The entire world was divided into two halves on the judgement day, one supporting Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the other half backing Manny Pacquaio. And finally, the final score of jury crowned Floyd Mayweather Jr. a champion.
The fight between these two profic boxers was scheduled in 2010 but disagrement between the professionals regarding terms of fight could not capitalize the event. The failure show was named Event of the Year by a magazine called The Ring. Finally the disagreement was resolved and the fight was scheduled for the year 2015 which the people of our generation witnessed as one of the much awaited fights and moreove, remembered it as billion dollars fight forever.
The fight was broadcasted in television through pay-per-view (PPV) basis by HBO and Showtime. HBO holds rights of Pacquaio whereas Showtime for Mayweather. Three major televisions of Philippines broadcasted the show and the purchase rights of the show was estimated to be 4.4 million dollars initially. Half of the country’s (Philippines) households watched the match.
The PPV alone set new record in the US by generating $410 million revenue. It was the highest-grossing PPV in the history which surpassed the show between Mayweather and Saul Alvarez in 2013. The cost for PPV was USD89.95 and additional USD10 was charged for high definition in the US. This is 40 per cent more than the cost of PPV between Mayweather and Alvarez in 2013.
The winner of the fight—Mayweather—won a belt worth $1 million. The belt is embedded with thousands of emeralds. Similalry, the belt is imprinted with the face of both the boxers— Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. It also imprints two more faces on it, José Sulaimán and Muhammad Ali.
According to a source, Mayweather earned around USD230 million from the fight of the Fight of the Century whereas Pacquiao bagged around USD 150 million.
Before hanging up his gloves in September 2015, Mayweather earned USD700 million including his endorsement deals. Similarly, Pacquiao’s net worth is estimated in between USD200 to USD250 million.
